The first portion of the doctoral program aims to instill theory and analytical methods of the topic of economics, and develop individuals capable of leveraging those abilities in the real world.9
The second portion of the doctoral program aims to develop individuals who are capable of conducting their own studies as independent researchers, and put their abilities to practical use in research, education in various fields of economics, and application of economics to fields such as investigation and forecasting.
Our program is unique in that it provides solid fundamentals and training through coursework, as well as the small class sizes, which enable dialog-based research guidance.
Theories and analytical methods learned through the Master’s (Doctoral) Program in Economics may be applied to various tasks.
For example :
・Drawing up strategies or policies for corporations and governments.
・Economic analysis and forecasts for research organizations.
・Fund management and procurement for financial institutions.
・Consulting in the private sector.
First portion of the doctoral program
・Selections are based on written examination regarding the course subjects (microeconomics, macroeconomics, statistics/econometrics) and English, as well as an oral examination based on your research plan.
・The English written examination requirement can be waived depending on scores from TOEFL or TOEFL ITP tests administered by Sophia.
・The course subject written examination requirement can be waived depending on results from the Japan Economics Education Association’s ERE (Economics Record Examination).
・The course subject written examination emphasizes an understanding of economics that is widely accepted in academic circles.
Second portion of the doctoral program
・Selections are based on an oral examination regarding your master’s thesis (or equivalent work).

・Selections are based on a written application and an oral examination based on your research plan.
