The Academics and Advantages of the Department of Economics

We live in a world of constant change. A primary driver of change is globalization, which is a term we hear on a daily basis. Amid changes, we face various challenges tied to economics such as financial and fiscal issues, the state of international trade and economic development, urban issues, medical and labor policies, wealth gap, environmental issues, and more. In each of these issues, the interests of economic actors, including individuals, corporations, and nations intertwine or clash in a complex manner.

Curriculum

The first two years of the curriculum for Department of Economics students provide a foundation for studying economics through courses such as Introduction to Economics, Microeconomics A, and Microeconomics A ・B. These classes prepare students to study economics in English.

Course Descriptions

This course explores the history and institutions of the Japanese economy. After the end of the Second World War, the Japanese economy underwent rapid development, resulting in a unique Japanese employment system characterized by lifetime employment, as well as corporate hierarchy based on keiretsu conglomeration. However, issues such as the ‘Lost Generation, globalization, low birth rates, and an aging society have pushed the nation to rethink its distinct social system. Through an examination of the historical background and challenges faced by modern-day Japan, this course aims to establish a foundation for students analyze the future of Japanese economy.
